Module 0: Getting Started

Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to the Spring 2024 brand new offering of Responsible AI for the Earth Sciences.  This course builds on a previous offering in Spring 2021 called AI Ethics and Geoethics.  The Spring 2021 course was offered fully online.  The Spring 2024 course will be in person but this webpage will have all the readings and assignments.

This course focuses on how to ethically and responsibility create Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a wide variety of Earth and environmental sciences (ES). Topics include responsible conduct of research, ethical scientific conduct, ownership of ideas, algorithms and data, and ethics of developing AI for ES applications. Learning activities include active discussions and debates, writing, and projects. As an integral part of working on AI for interdisciplinary applications, this course will also foster critical skills for interdisciplinary research. To learn more, hop to the syllabus in the Important Links module.

Note that all of the course material is being hosted by the NSF AI Institute for Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography, though OU students will access it via canvas.  This enables the material to be available to anyone outside of OU as well, which is part of the educational outreach of the NSF institute. Not only are we collecting all of the materials in one place to make it easier for the students but we want to share what we have created for AI Ethics for Earth Sciences with anyone else working in AI for the Earth Sciences!  Please feel free to use any of the materials you find here for your own course offerings or just your own education.

To understand how each module is organized, make sure to take the website tour (linked below).  Each module page has the menu for that module at the bottom of the page!
