Ethical Frameworks
Ethical frameworks are not new. What is relatively new is the study of ethics for AI and newer still, the study of how we apply these AI ethics frameworks to a variety of applications. Medicine is probably one of the first to be studied as it has a rich and long history of ethical codes of conduct and AI was quickly seen as something that needed to fit into these before being used.
In this module, we will learn about existing ethical frameworks and existing frameworks of ethics for the geosciences and Earth Sciences. Intertwined with the study of ethical frameworks for science is the responsible conduct of research. We will also read about this field and complete some in-class exercises on case studies.
Note, I am saving the list of existing AI ethics frameworks for the next module as it will be part of one of our key class products (coming up with a list of human-centered values for AI Ethics for the Earth Science).
