Module 6: AI Policies and Laws
US Policy and Law
US Policy and Law on AI
The US is behind the EU on passing policies and laws regulating AI. Congress knows this and has been working hard on drafting new AI legislation. As of the time that I wrote this module, there is nothing specifically proposed to read that I am aware of (but I’d be glad to be proven wrong and add that to our list!). What we will read instead are some recent articles discussing the need for policies and laws regulating AI in the US.
Assignment 1
We will read some news articles and analyses focusing on AI policies and laws in the US.
Our first article is from the NY Times. This link should be free for 30 days so it should work from anywhere (campus or not) but, if not, it is free to read the Times from campus. It is a short read and goes well beyond policy.
Now, looking at policy specifically, the White House issued an executive order on AI in October of 2023. We will read a summary of it as well as see what has happened since it was issued.
- Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence
- Fact Sheet: Biden-Harris Administration Announces Key AI Actions Following President Biden’s Landmark Executive Order
- Optional: Explore more of what the White House is doing on ai.gov
Assignment 2
Since we have a guest speaker, Kiri Wagstaff, who is working on AI policy, our reading today are two policy bills on AI related to weather and the environmental sciences.
Assignment 3
Our first reading today is the latest AI bill of rights from Office of Science and Technology Policy.
We will also read a framework proposed by the Brookings Institute on generative AI for political ads.
Finally, I am linking to the executive summary for a CSET document on issues with keywords that are not defined in AI regulations. The full report is optional reading but please read the executive summary.
- The Inigo Montoya Problem for Trustworthy AI: The Use of Keywords in Policy and Research
- Optional: download the full report (it is a quick read, only 25 pages and has some good graphics). The link is in the page above.
